Sports Commentator Job Description

Sports commentators are the voices you hear during televised sporting events. They provide play-by-play commentary and analysis on everything from professional football to high school basketball, providing insight into what’s happening on the field or court as well as background information about the players and teams involved. Sports commentators must be knowledgeable about the sport they’re covering—they can’t just be good talkers. They need to know the rules of the game, how it’s played, and the strategies used by different teams and players. This knowledge helps them paint a picture for viewers who may not be familiar with the sport being broadcast.

Sports Commentator Responsibilities

• Prepare for and attend all assigned games, practices, and events.

• Research teams, players, coaches, and statistics prior to each broadcast

• Deliver live commentary during the game, providing play-by-play analysis and color commentary as needed.

• Work with the production team to ensure a smooth broadcast, including coordinating on-air cues and commercial breaks.

• Engage with viewers on social media platforms during and after the broadcast.

• Write and produce post-game wrap-ups, highlights, and other digital content as needed.

• Make appearances on behalf of the network or station at public events, sponsor activations, and community outreach initiatives.

• Adhere to all network guidelines and standards regarding on-air conduct and appearance.

• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of league rules, player contracts, and salary cap restrictions.

• Stay abreast of current news and storylines surrounding the team and league.

• Serve as a subject matter expert on all things related to sport and team.

• Conduct interviews with players, coaches, front office personnel, and other stakeholders as needed.

Sports Commentator Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field

• 5+ years’ experience as a sports commentator, journalist, or similar role

• Exceptional writing and research skills

• Strong understanding of the game of basketball

• Ability to work independently and with a team to meet deadlines.

• Excellent organizational skill and multitasking ability

• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat Pro
