Sports Official Job Description

Umpires, referees, and sports officials officiate at competitions, sporting events, and other games. This means he or she is responsible for judging performances of the competitors to determine who has won an event. Officials must inspect all equipment for safety and compliance as well as make sure the participants are safe to play. They need to keep watch over start and stop times, call attention to infractions when necessary, and regulate play. All sports officials must be prepared to settle disputes by participants and enforce any penalties according to the rules of the game. He or she is expected to be able to anticipate a play, therefore, place themselves into the best position to observe and judge a play.


Sports Official Responsibilities

  • Manage conflicts and resolutions between other umpires and coaches/parents.

  • Referee of soccer, softball, basketball, volleyball, and flag football CPR certify.

  • Execute game promotions during collegiate football, basketball, volleyball, and other events around campus.

  • Coach members participate in sport activities such as basketball and volleyball to encourage both exercise and friendly competition.

  • Exercise leadership skills by coaching the new officials while working in a fast-paced environment and maintaining composure under pressure.

  • Attend NFL games, shadow the cameraman and assist coordinating interviews with players in the locker rooms after games.

  • Develop marketing materials for professional NSL athletes.

  • Utilize leadership skills as an official and mentor to less-experience officials.

  • Demonstrate professional characteristics when communicating with coaches, players, and fellow umpires.

  • Provide direction for the safety and regulation of all players according to the NSL rules.

Sports Official Requirements

  • Obtain a high school diploma or equivalent.

  • Choose the sport you want to officiate.

  • Obtain specific training.

  • Complete state registration.

  • Gain experience for career advancement.

  • Become certified.
